Self-Defense and Physical Fitness Courses for Clients are back at the MAB-Mackay!

The goal of the course is to teach different self-defense strategies that are applicable to a variety of potentially dangerous situations encountered in daily life, as well as a physical fitness activity designed for all levels.

The teaching is adapted to accommodate visually impaired participants. One martial art instructor as well as one orientation and mobility specialist from the MAB-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre will ensure the smooth unfolding of each of the sessions. Each class is divided into three segments:

  1. the warm-up segment/physical fitness
  2. the technical portion, emphasizing basic and functional self-defense techniques as well as other martial arts exercises
  3. question period/specific preoccupations

The course has also been modified so as to accommodate the specific needs and interests of the participants. The course is span for a period of 8 weeks, beginning May 22th and terminating July 10th. The courses is taking place every Tuesday from 11:00 to 12:00 in Layton hall at the MAB site.

The cost for the 8 sessions is $120.00 per person payable directly to the instructor. A payment plan/agreement can be discussed with the instructors at the time of the first course. To reserve your spot or for additional information, please contact Martine Scott at 514-488-5552 ext. 2711.

Participation Criteria:

  1. A diagnosis of a visual impairment
  2. Age: 16 to 65
  3. No other significant associated limitation (physical, intellectual impairment, cognitive impairment etc.)
  4. Ability to get oneself to and from the courses
  5. Ability to stand for 1 hour and participate in an activity of moderate intensity.
