Rehabilitation program in specialized schools

Clientele:

For children and adolescents between 4 and 17 years of age (or 18 to 21 years of age if still attending high school) with physical impairments, such as a:

• Motor Impairment
• Speech and Language Impairment
• Visual Impairment

Children eligible for this program must be attending Mackay Centre School, Philip E. Layton School or a satellite class at Westmount High School of the English Montreal school Board.

Services offered:

• The Rehabilitation team, in close collaboration with teachers, adopts a dynamic multidisciplinary approach to assess the student’s functional status and developmental level. Interventions consist but are not limited to developing functional and compensatory skills to facilitate the student’s learning and to maximize independence in different daily activities and within a range of continuum settings (school, home, community).
  Students benefit from individual and group interventions, and from specially designed educational programs which are delivered in an adapted physical environment with specialized materials, equipment and resources. Other specialised interventions include:
• Assessment and training in orientation and mobility at school, at home and in the community
• Assessment of functional vision, visual skills training, and compensatory skill training (Braille, pictograms etc)
• Assessment of verbal, nonverbal and written communication, and the use of compensatory communication aids
• Assessment and training in the use of technical aids and adapted computer aids and software
• Nursing support to clients with complex medical needs
• Behaviour and social skills development and strategies to facilitate the students ability to learn and enhance their social participation and integration in their different daily living environments (home, school and community)
• Psychosocial support for the child and his her family
• Parent workshops and support group
• Adapted sports and leisure activities at school and within the community (Sports Adventurer’s Club, Camp Massawippi, Défi sportif, Skating Program)
• Consultation, transition and integration planning for school, and socio-occupational activities

• Mackay Centre School at the Mackay site, Westmount High Satellite class students

In order to be eligible for this program, the child must be attending the Mackay Centre School or Philip E. Layton School.
